The HVAC components are the most important types of HVAC parts you have. These basic elements of your HVAC system ensure you have that perfectly cooled or warmed air year-round.
Here are the basic components of a basic working HVAC system.
Refrigerant
Refrigerant is the fluid that makes your air conditioning air cool. It is the most critical component of your HVAC system that creates cool air. Without it, your system will blow warm air.
The refrigerant absorbs heat surrounding it and then provides cool air. In the winter, the refrigerant absorbs heat from outside and then blows that heat into your home.
Refrigerant consists of chemicals like R410A and R134 hydrofluorocarbons. Some systems used R-22 and R-12 in the past, but research led scientists to believe that these chemicals were contributing to the greenhouse effect.
In your annual air conditioning maintenance call, your technician should check your refrigerant levels. When these levels run out, your HVAC can no longer adequately cool your air.
Furthermore, if you continue to run your HVAC system without adequate refrigerant, the entire HVAC unit will overheat and quit.
Compressor
The compressor compresses the refrigerant. It converts the chemical from a gas into a liquid, preparing it for exhausting the heat that it picks up in the condenser. The compressor is outside of your home in the HVAC’s outdoor unit.
Evaporator Coils
Your refrigerant flows through your evaporator coils. As it flows, the refrigerant absorbs the heat of the indoor air around it. The air that results is the cold air you feel circulating throughout your house from your vents.
The coils are inside your indoor unit or evaporator. To maintain them, you need to keep the coils clean and free from dust and debris.
Condenser
The condenser is your outside unit. It distributes the heat your coils absorbed during the cooling process. As the refrigerant enters the condenser, the coils transfer the heat from the refrigerant to the outside air, where the condenser dissipates it.
Ducts and Vents
Your ducts are the tubes inside your building that transport air. They take the conditioned air from the HVAC system to each room where you have a vent.
Ducts need annual cleaning and maintenance. Dust, debris, and even unwanted critters can make their way into the ducts and create a hazard. To ensure the ducts work properly, have them inspected and cleaned annually.
Vents are the endpoint for the ducts. These are the rectangular openings in each room sitting on the ceiling, floor, or wall. When your HVAC system is on, you should feel air moving from a properly working vent.
Blower
The blower motor is the device that pumps the conditioned air throughout your home. It kicks in when the thermostat tells it to. The thermostat will read the air temperature, and when the air temperature either dips or raises beyond the set desired temperature, the thermostat will send a signal to the blower that turns it on and begins the air treatment process.
